Inviting family members
Invite as many people as you like. They need no Libreyard account and pay nothing.
Invite someone
- Open your admin page at
https://NAME.libreyard.app/adminwith the admin token. - Under Users, invite the person's email address.
- Tell them the address of the vault yourself. Your instance does not send the invitation by email.
- They open
https://NAME.libreyard.app, create an account with that same email address, and choose their own master password. - They install the Bitwarden app or extension and set it to your server.
Only invited addresses can create an account. Open sign-up is off by default. Leave it off.
What to tell them
- The master password cannot be reset by you or by Libreyard. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe.
- Use the app or the browser extension day to day, not the website.
- The app keeps a copy of the vault on the device. If the server is unreachable they can still read their passwords.
Share passwords
Sharing in Vaultwarden works through organisations, and only between accounts on the same instance.
- In the web vault, create an organisation.
- Invite members to it by the email address of their account.
- Confirm each member on the organisation's Members page once they have an account. Confirming is the step that gives them the organisation's key.
- Put shared items in a collection, and choose who can see each collection.
Bitwarden's help describes organisations and collections. In Vaultwarden these features need no paid plan.
Email from your instance
Instances are currently set up without outbound email. The reason: you can read every setting of your instance on the admin page, so a mail credential shared by all customers would be visible to all of them. A credential per instance is planned.
Until then:
- Invitations work, as described above, but no message is sent.
- Anything in Vaultwarden that needs to send email does not work: email verification, two-step login by email, the master password hint by email.
- For two-step login inside the vault, use an authenticator app or a security key.
You can enter your own SMTP server on the admin page. Libreyard has not tested that and does not support it yet.
Friends
People outside your household should not be inside your instance, where you administer their accounts. They need an instance of their own.
